Toyota, Mazda’s deceleration delivers COVID-19 challenge for shipping lines

The seven big Japanese automakers are feeling the impact from COVID-19 related reductions in demand and factory closures. Global production fell 27.5% year over year in April while exports from Japan dropped by 12.2%. Toyota led the decline in volume terms with a 14.3% slide while Mazda’s fell fastest by 20.2%. Toyota will rebalance their global supply chain by accelerating production in China. The slide in global sales also brings revenue risks for the big car shipping firms.
