Chinese aluminum output set to rise as U.S. imports return to growth

China’s aluminum producers may add enough capacity to expand output by 8.0% year over year in 2021 according to S&P Global Platts. Much of that may be retained for domestic use with China’s exports of aluminum down by 0.6% year over year in the three months to Nov. 30 and recovering by just 2.6% in December. Exports to the U.S. have declined steadily due to tariffs, which are unlikely to be removed by the Biden administration in the near-term, as well as the pandemic.
