Empty container handling imbalance widens, farm goods exports soaring

U.S. logistics networks appear to still be out of balance when considering exports of loaded containers and handling of empty containers. Exports of loaded freight from the U.S. west coast ports fell by 14.6% year over year in February while handling of empty containers rose by 20.2%. That was the widest spread in performance since November. The imbalance comes amidst a Federal Maritime Commission review of the handling practices of the major container lines, including concerns that U.S. farm goods exports are being refused in favor of shipping empty containers.
