– US President Donald Trump has introduced a “Fair and Reciprocal” plan that will increase import duties to levels charged by other countries and could add 4.8 percentage points to average duty rates across the largest 50 exporting regions before adding allowances for value-added tax (VAT) rates and more. Implementation will only begin after April 1. Widespread retaliation can be expected. Tariffs on steel and aluminum have been widened and now cover the 82.5% of imports not previously covered.
